The History of Halloween

The origins of Halloween can be traced back to Celtic people. The Celts had paganic beliefs and they had a festival called Samhain. They believed that on the day of Samhain, the dead walked among the living. Then, Christians adopted this belief and it turned to Halloween. Halloween is now celebrated every year on October 31st. Although people feared the dead and believed the dead would visit them with unpleasant circumstances, Halloween is now a festive event. Especially the children are loving it because of the costumes and trick-or-treat customs. That custom also goes back to the Celts who wore costumes to repel and confuse the dead. Also, in medieval Britain, people used carved pumpkins to go from door to door to collect food for their dead. All of these customs are largely adopted by today’s world in one of the biggest festive events of the year.

History of Trick-or-Treating

Trick or treat custom goes back to the 1920s. Also, before that, there were traditions of “house-to-house” visiting and collecting food in exchange for a verse. Yet, it started in Britain and then spread to the rest of the world. The first incident of disguising as superficial beings and going from house to house was seen in 1911 in North America. Then, it evolved until today where the children are disguising in Halloween costumes and collect trick or treats from around the neighborhood. Some people give them treats which include candy bars and chocolates for example. And some other choose to give the children tricks, which would entertain the kids and let them have a good time.

As you can see both Halloween and trick-or-treating have a long history and they are celebrated widely. The entertainment is more intense than the fear it was before. In fact, what’s not to like about Halloween in today’s world? So, tell us whether you give trick or treat to children? Also, did you get more tricks or more treats when you were a child?
